Instructions

With Fillr, you can fill Word templates in just a few steps. Follow this detailed guide to get the most out of the tool.

Step 1: Prepare Template

Open your Word file and insert placeholders where you want content to be filled in later.

  • Use {{Placeholder}} for single-line fields (e.g., {{FirstName}}, {{Date}}, {{CustomerID}})
  • Use {{Placeholder...}} for multi-line text fields (e.g., {{Description...}}, {{Notes...}})
  • Placeholder names can contain letters, numbers, umlauts, and spaces
  • Tip: Format the placeholders exactly as you want the inserted text to appear (font, size, color)
  • Make sure to save the document as a .docx file

Step 2: Upload Document

Upload your prepared Word file to Fillr. The document is processed entirely in your browser.

  • Drag and drop the file into the upload area
  • Alternatively, click on the upload area to select the file
  • Only .docx files are supported (Word 2007 and newer)
  • Processing happens entirely locally - your data never leaves the browser
  • After upload, all detected placeholders are automatically listed

Step 3: Fill Placeholders

Fill the detected placeholders with your values. The preview updates in real-time.

  • Each placeholder is displayed as its own input field
  • For multi-line placeholders ({{Name...}}), a larger text area appears
  • The document preview shows your entries in real-time with color highlighting
  • Green = placeholder filled, Red = placeholder open, Yellow = currently editing
  • Use the save icon (💾) to save frequently used values for later
  • Saved values will appear as suggestions next time

Step 4: Manage Templates

Save complete templates with all values to reuse them for similar documents.

  • Click "Save" to save all current values as a template
  • Give the template a meaningful name
  • Templates are associated based on the document's placeholder structure
  • Click "Load" to apply a saved template
  • Templates can be deleted at any time
  • All data is stored locally in the browser (not on servers)

Step 5: Download Document

Download the completed document. All placeholders will be replaced with your entries.

  • Click "Download Document" in the upper right corner
  • The document is saved with "_filled" in the filename
  • All formatting from the original document is preserved
  • Unfilled placeholders remain as placeholders in the document
  • The downloaded document can be edited like any normal Word file

Tips for Optimal Results

  • Create a master template with all required placeholders and use it as a base for all future documents.
  • Use unique placeholder names to avoid confusion (e.g., {{Sender_Name}} instead of just {{Name}}).
  • Type placeholders directly in Word instead of copying them from other programs.
  • Save frequently used values (like your address or company details) with the save icon for quick access.
  • Use the template feature for recurring documents with similar content.
